Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred.

Context

First Chronicles records the genealogies of Israel and the reign of King David. Chapter 12 describes warriors from every tribe gathering at Hebron to make David king, as the Lord had promised. This event fulfilled God’s word and showed the unity of the tribes in supporting David.

The tribe of Simeon descended from Simeon, the second son of Jacob and Leah (Genesis 29:33). Their allotted land lay in the south, inside the territory of Judah (Joshua 19:1-9). Earlier, Jacob had pronounced that Simeon would be scattered in Israel (Genesis 49:5-7), yet here they appear as a strong, united force. Their presence is notable because this tribe had been diminished, but now they contribute a significant number of warriors.

Meaning

The phrase “mighty men of valour” describes soldiers known for courage, strength, and skill in war. They were trained, brave, and ready to fight. The number seven thousand one hundred shows a large and serious contribution to David’s cause. These men came willingly, not under compulsion, demonstrating their loyalty to God’s chosen king.

Biblical connections

This gathering at Hebron fulfilled God’s promise to David and united the tribes under one ruler. For Simeon, it marked a turn from earlier weakness to renewed strength. God restored a tribe that had been scattered, giving them honour in His plan. Their willingness to support David reflects the importance of faithful support for God’s anointed leader.

God remains faithful to His promises. He who restored Simeon and established David’s kingdom continues to work in every generation. We can trust Him to complete what He has begun, and we can serve Him with the same wholehearted commitment these warriors displayed.
