1 Chronicles 12:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Moreover, they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.”

This verse is part of a passage in 1 Chronicles that describes the mighty men who joined David when he was anointed as king over Israel. These men were from various tribes of Israel, and they came to support David and strengthen his reign.

In 1 Chronicles 12:28, the focus is on the provisions that were brought by those who supported David’s kingship. It mentions the tribes of Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali specifically. These tribes brought a variety of supplies, including bread, meat, fig cakes, raisins, wine, oil, and livestock such as oxen and sheep. The abundance of provisions brought great joy to the people of Israel.

There are a few lessons we can learn from this verse:

Unity and support:The fact that people from different tribes came together to support David demonstrates the unity and solidarity among the Israelites. They recognised David’s anointing as king and rallied behind him, providing him with the resources he needed. This reminds us of the importance of supporting and standing with one another, especially in times of leadership and transition.

Generosity and provision:The people’s willingness to bring abundant provisions reflects their generosity and their desire to contribute to the well‑being of the nation. They brought not only necessities like bread and meat but also delicacies like fig cakes and raisins. This teaches us the value of generosity and sharing what we have with others, especially when it comes to supporting God’s work and those in need.

Joy in serving God:The verse concludes by stating that there was joy in Israel because of the abundance of provisions. This joy likely stemmed from the recognition that they were playing a part in the establishment of God’s chosen king and the advancement of God’s purposes. It reminds us that when we are actively involved in serving God’s kingdom and contributing to His work, there is a deep sense of joy and fulfilment that comes from aligning ourselves with His plans.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 12:28 highlights the unity, generosity, and joy that characterised the support given to David as king. It encourages us to reflect on our own willingness to support God’s work and serve His purposes, recognising that when we do, we not only bless others but also experience the joy that comes from aligning ourselves with His will.
