1 Chronicles 12:40

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.”

Historical Context:The book of 1 Chronicles provides a historical account of Israel’s lineage and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. Chapter 12 specifically describes the gathering of warriors from various tribes to join David in Hebron, before he became the king of all Israel.

Unity and Support:In verse 40, we see the unity and support of Israel’s tribes as they join David. The tribes mentioned here are Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali. They brought provisions such as bread, meat, meal, cakes of figs, bunches of raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep. This generous provision demonstrates their commitment to David’s cause and their desire to contribute to the well‑being and celebration of the nation.

Generosity and Joy:The abundance of provisions mentioned in the verse indicates the generosity and willingness of the tribes to support David and the gathering of warriors. They provided not only basic necessities like bread and meat but also delicacies like cakes of figs and bunches of raisins. The presence of wine and oil suggests a festive atmosphere. The verse explicitly states, “for there was joy in Israel.” This highlights the joy and celebration among the people as they united under David’s leadership.

Symbolic Significance:The act of bringing provisions can be seen as a symbol of the tribes’ commitment to the future king, David, and their willingness to provide for his needs. It reflects a sense of loyalty, unity, and a recognition of David’s God‑given role as the anointed leader of Israel.
