1 Chronicles 13:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

And Dauid was displeased, because the Lord had made a breach vpon Uzza; wherefore that place is called Perez-Uzza, to this day. 1 Chronicles 13:11 (KJV)

1 Chronicles is a historical book in the Old Testament that records the reign of King David and the establishment of the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem. In chapter 13 David attempts to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, but a tragic incident occurs on the way.

The verse records David’s displeasure because the LORD struck Uzzah when he reached out to steady the Ark of the Covenant as the oxen stumbled. Uzzah’s action was viewed as a violation of the sacredness and reverence due to the Ark, and the Lord’s anger was kindled, resulting in Uzzah’s death.

This event underscores the holiness of God. The Ark represented God’s presence among His people, and Uzzah’s death served as a stark reminder that the divine presence must be approached with awe and respect. It teaches believers to honor God’s holiness in worship and in all aspects of life.

The incident also highlights the consequences of disobedience. The Levites alone were appointed to carry the Ark, using the poles that God had provided. David’s decision to transport the Ark on a cart, rather than following the prescribed method, led to tragedy. The narrative therefore stresses the importance of obeying God’s explicit commands and seeking His guidance in every undertaking.

David’s displeasure reflects an initial misunderstanding of God’s holiness and how to approach Him. The episode caused him to reevaluate his approach, and later he sought to bring the Ark to Jerusalem according to God’s instructions. This emphasizes the need for a healthy fear of the Lord, aligning our actions with His will.

Application to our lives includes cultivating reverence in worship. Just as Uzzah’s death reminded Israel of God’s holiness, believers should give God the respect, honour, and awe He deserves. Obedience to God’s commands—both in worship and daily conduct—is essential; seeking guidance through prayer and Scripture helps align our actions with His will, for disobedience can have serious consequences.

Developing a healthy fear of the Lord helps maintain a proper perspective of His authority. It motivates a lifestyle that pleases Him, prevents taking His grace for granted, and encourages treating sacred things with the reverence they merit.
