Dauid therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the hoste of the Philistines from Gibeon euen to Gazer. 1 Chronicles 14:16 (KJV)

Context

In 1 Chronicles 14 we encounter an account of David’s reign as king of Israel, focusing on his battles against the Philistines. The chapter records that before any military action David sought the Lord’s guidance, and this verse records his faithful execution of the divine command.

Obedience to God

The verse underscores David’s obedience to God’s instructions. Rather than relying solely on his own military strategies or personal wisdom, David prioritized seeking God’s will and acting accordingly. His willingness to follow the specific direction—advancing from Gibeon toward Gezer—demonstrates a king who places divine authority above human counsel.

Victory over the Philistines

Because David obeyed, the narrative records a decisive triumph. The forces of Israel “smote the host of the Philistines” and drove them back from Gibeon all the way to Gezer. The breadth of the victory, extending from one strategic city to another, illustrates the tangible result of faithful obedience. It also shows that God’s guidance brought about a comprehensive defeat of the enemy, securing the border regions of Israel.

Historical and Geographical Context

Gibeon was a prominent city in the territory of Benjamin, situated on the northern edge of the Shephelah. Gezer lay further south in the lowland region of Canaan, a key gateway between the hill country and the coastal plains. The distance between these two sites represents a considerable stretch of territory, indicating that the Philistine forces were driven out of a wide area. Understanding the geography helps appreciate the magnitude of the military success and the strategic importance of securing these locations for the stability of David’s kingdom.
