1 Chronicles 17:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.”

Context:1 Chronicles 17 is part of the historical account of King David’s desire to build a house for the Lord, a permanent dwelling place for the ark of the covenant. In this chapter, David expresses his intention to build a temple to replace the tabernacle. However, God speaks to the prophet Nathan and reveals His plan to establish a dynasty through David’s descendants.

The promise of a future descendant:In 1 Chronicles 17:11, God assures David that after his days have ended, He will raise up one of David’s sons to establish his kingdom. This promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who is a descendant of David according to the genealogies recorded in the Gospels (Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38). Jesus is the ultimate fulfilment of this prophecy, as He establishes an eternal kingdom.

David’s role and God’s faithfulness:God chose David, a shepherd boy, to be the king of Israel, and through him, God established a line of kings that would lead to the birth of the Messiah. Despite David’s flaws and shortcomings, God remained faithful to His promise. This verse highlights God’s sovereignty and His commitment to fulfilling His purposes in and through His chosen people.

The establishment of an everlasting kingdom:God’s promise to raise up a descendant of David to establish an enduring kingdom goes beyond the earthly realm. Jesus Christ, the Son of David, inaugurated the Kingdom of God through His life, death, and resurrection. This kingdom transcends time and space and is characterised by righteousness, peace, and the rule of God. As believers in Christ, we are part of this eternal kingdom.

Application to believers today:As we reflect on 1 Chronicles 17:11, we can find encouragement and hope in God’s faithfulness. Just as He fulfilled His promise to David, we can trust that God is faithful to His promises to us. He has a plan and a purpose for our lives. We can take comfort in knowing that God is working out His sovereign plan, even when we face challenges and uncertainties. We can also find assurance in the establishment of God’s everlasting kingdom through Jesus Christ, knowing that we are citizens of this kingdom and heirs of its promises.
