1 Chronicles 17:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee.”

This verse is part of a larger passage where God is speaking to King David through the prophet Nathan.

In this particular verse, God is making a promise to David regarding his lineage and the establishment of his kingdom.

1 Chronicles 17:13 can be understood in the context of the Davidic Covenant, which God made with David.

In this covenant, God promises to establish a lasting kingdom for David and his descendants.

This verse specifically focuses on the relationship between God and the future ruler from David’s line.

Let’s break down the verse further:

“I will be his father, and he shall be my son”: This statement highlights the special relationship God establishes with the future king from David’s lineage. It signifies a close, intimate connection between God and the chosen ruler.

In the immediate context, this promise refers to David’s son Solomon, who would succeed him as king.

“I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee”: Here, God assures David that His mercy will remain with the chosen king, unlike the previous ruler. The reference to the one who was before David may allude to Saul, the first king of Israel. Saul had lost God’s favour due to his disobedience, but God is assuring David that the chosen king from his line will not suffer the same fate.

This verse emphasizes God’s faithfulness and commitment to His promises. It highlights the special relationship He establishes with the Davidic line, ensuring that His mercy will be upon the chosen king and that the kingdom will endure.

From a broader perspective, this verse also points forward to Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate fulfilment of the Davidic Covenant. Jesus, a descendant of David, embodies the ideal ruler promised by God. He is the Son of God and the rightful heir to David’s throne. In this sense, the verse foreshadows the coming of Jesus and His eternal reign.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 17:13 reflects God’s faithfulness, His establishment of a unique relationship with the Davidic line, and the ultimate fulfilment of His promises in Jesus Christ.
