1 Chronicles 17:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speake vnto Dauid. 1 Chronicles 17:15 (KJV)

1 Chronicles 17:15 sits within a larger passage where King David expresses his desire to build a house for God, a permanent dwelling place for the Lord’s name. David shares his plan with the prophet Nathan, who at first gives his approval. That same night, however, God speaks to Nathan and gives him a specific message to deliver to David.

The verse itself records Nathan’s words: “According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.” The reference to “all these words” and “all this vision” points back to the divine revelation that God had just given through Nathan, revealing His will concerning the temple.

Nathan’s role as God’s messenger is highlighted here. As a prophet, he is responsible for conveying God’s revelation accurately, and he does so by speaking to David based on the vision he received.

The context shows that God had a different plan for the temple. Although David’s intention to build a house for God was noble, God had chosen David’s son Solomon to carry out the work (see 1 Chronicles 17:11‑12). This intervention underscores God’s sovereignty and the importance of aligning with His purpose rather than our own designs.

David’s response, recorded in the following verses, is one of humility and praise. He accepts God’s decision, acknowledges the faithfulness of God’s promises, and submits his own ambitions to the higher purpose God has set.

From this passage we draw several key lessons. First, we see the need to seek God’s guidance through His Word and His messengers rather than relying solely on our own understanding. Second, David’s humble acceptance models the posture of submission that believers are called to exhibit when God’s will differs from personal desire. Finally, the episode reminds us of God’s ultimate control over all plans; trusting in His sovereignty brings peace and contentment.
