1 Chronicles 17:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God: for thou hast also spoken of thy seruants house, for a great while to come, and hast regarded mee according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Lord God. 1 Chronicles 17:17 (KJV)

Historical Context: In 1 Chronicles 17 we find David reflecting on his desire to build a temple for the Lord. Through the prophet Nathan God reveals that David will not be the one to build the temple; his son will carry out the task. God also promises David an everlasting dynasty, assuring that one of his descendants will rule on the throne of Israel forever. In verse 17 David offers a prayer that acknowledges the magnitude of God’s promise. Though the verse does not explicitly call the promise “a small thing,” David’s words express humility and an appeal to God’s mercy and faithfulness.

God’s Regard for David: David acknowledges that God has honored him beyond his humble origins as a shepherd, elevating him to the position of king and treating him with honor. This recognition highlights the mercy and grace of God in choosing and exalting David, emphasizing that God’s blessings are rooted in His sovereign will rather than human standards.

Trust in God’s Promises: The passage demonstrates David’s confidence in God’s faithfulness. He trusts that the covenant will endure for generations, reflecting a reliance on God’s word. David’s unwavering trust encourages believers to rely on God’s faithfulness, believing that He will fulfill His promises in our lives even when they seem modest or insignificant.

Humility before God: David’s humility serves as an example for us to recognize our dependence on God and to acknowledge His greatness in our lives. Regardless of our achievements or status, we should approach God with humility, aware that all blessings come from His sovereign purpose.

God’s Sovereign Will: David’s recognition of God’s sovereignty reminds us that divine plans and blessings are not based on human standards. We should seek to align our lives with God’s will, trusting that He can lift us up and fulfill His purpose for us.
