1 Chronicles 17:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

O Lord, for thy seruants sake, and according to thine owne heart, hast thou done all this greatnesse in making knowen all these great things. 1 Chronicles 17:19 (KJV)

In his prayer, David says, “O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things,” reflecting his gratitude and awe.

Context: In this chapter, King David desires to build a permanent house for the Lord, a temple, as a dwelling place for the Ark of the Covenant. However, God reveals to the prophet Nathan that David is not the one who will build the temple but that his son Solomon will carry out this task. Instead, God promises to establish David’s lineage forever and build a house (a dynasty) for him.

Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty: In this verse, David acknowledges the Lord’s authority and sovereignty. He recognizes that everything God has done, including the great promises He made to David, is in accordance with His own heart and will. David humbly acknowledges that it is God’s prerogative to fulfill His promises and accomplish great things.

Gratitude for God’s Faithfulness: David expresses his gratitude to God for His faithfulness and the great things He has done. Throughout his life, David had experienced God’s provision, protection, and guidance. He acknowledges that all the greatness he has witnessed is a result of God’s unfailing love and mercy toward him, His servant.

God’s Revelation of His Plans: David marvels at how God has made known all these great things to him. He recognizes that God has chosen to reveal His plans, promises, and purposes to David. This emphasizes the intimate relationship David had with God and the special favour he received.
