1 Chronicles 19:10

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

Context

This verse comes from the time of King David. The Ammonites had insulted David’s messengers, and war broke out. They hired Syrian soldiers to help them. Joab, the commander of David’s army, saw that the enemy stood both in front and behind. He had to act quickly and wisely.

Meaning

Joab chose “the choice of Israel,” meaning the best and strongest soldiers. He placed them in battle order against the Syrians. This shows his skill as a leader. He did not panic when surrounded. Instead, he used the best resources he had to meet the greater danger. His calm assessment and decisive action turned a difficult position into a plan.

Biblical connections

The parallel account in 2 Samuel 10:9-10 shows that Joab gave his brother Abishai charge of the rest of the army to fight the Ammonites. Joab also encouraged Abishai to be brave, saying, “Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good” (2 Samuel 10:12). This reveals that the battle was not only for Israel but for God’s people and cities, and that final trust belonged to the LORD. Joab’s words show that courage and faith work together.
