Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on 1 Chronicles 19:2 in the King James Version (KJV). This verse is found in the Old Testament and provides insights into a historical event involving King David.

First, let’s read the verse:

This verse is found in the Old Testament and provides insights into a historical event involving King David.

  • Context:In order to understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to consider the surrounding verses and the historical context. Chapter 19 of 1 Chronicles narrates a conflict between David, the king of Israel, and the Ammonites. Nahash, the father of Hanun, had shown kindness to David in the past. Therefore, David sought to reciprocate that kindness by sending messengers to comfort Hanun after his father’s death.
  • Kindness and Reciprocity:The verse highlights the value David placed on kindness and reciprocating the kindness shown to him. David recognized the kindness extended to him by Hanun’s father, and as an act of gratitude and goodwill, he decided to show kindness to Hanun in return.
  • Compassion and Comfort:David’s messengers were sent to console Hanun in his time of grief. This demonstrates David’s compassion and concern for the well‑being of others, even those from different nations.
  • Cultural Implications:Understanding the cultural context is crucial for fully grasping the significance of this verse. In ancient times, when a person died, it was customary for friends and acquaintances to offer condolences and comfort to the bereaved family. David’s act of sending messengers to console Hanun reflects this cultural practice and exemplifies the values of honor, respect, and compassion.
