1 Chronicles 2:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And the sons of Onam were, Shammai, and Jada. And the sons of Shammai; Nadab and Abishur.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a part of the Old Testament and is primarily focused on genealogies and historical accounts of the Israelites. It serves as a record of the lineage of the tribes of Israel, including the descendants of Jacob (Israel). Chapter 2 specifically highlights the genealogy of the tribe of Judah.

The descendants of Onam:In verse 28, we are introduced to the sons of Onam. Onam was a descendant of Judah, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The verse mentions two of Onam’s sons: Shammai and Jada.

The sons of Shammai:The verse then focuses on the descendants of Shammai, one of Onam’s sons. Shammai had two sons mentioned, Nadab and Abishur. This genealogical record helps establish the lineage of the tribe of Judah.

Historical and spiritual significance:While this verse may appear relatively straightforward and primarily focused on listing names and descendants, it serves several purposes within the broader context of the Bible:

  • Historical lineage: The genealogical records found in 1 Chronicles were essential to the Israelites in maintaining their ancestral heritage. They reinforced the connection between the present generation and their forefathers, as well as helped establish the rightful lineage of individuals, especially with regard to their positions, inheritance, and rights within the community.
  • Messianic lineage: Another significant aspect of genealogies in the Bible, including those in 1 Chronicles, is their relevance to tracing the lineage of the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. The genealogy of Jesus can be traced back to Judah, one of Jacob’s sons, through King David, who is mentioned in subsequent verses in 1 Chronicles.
  • Individual significance: While the specific details of Shammai, Nadab, and Abishur mentioned in this verse might not have extensive additional scriptural references, it is worth noting that every person listed in the Bible has a unique story and purpose within God’s grand plan.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 2:28 provides a glimpse into the genealogy of the tribe of Judah and helps establish the historical and spiritual connections within the lineage of the Israelites.
