1 Chronicles 2:40
And Eleasah begate Sisamai, and Sisamai begate Shallum, 1 Chronicles 2:40 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that traces the genealogy of the Israelites from Adam to the period of the return from exile. Chapter 2 concentrates on the families of the tribe of Judah, and verse 40 belongs to the genealogy of Caleb, a prominent Judahite leader.
Eleasah appears briefly in this verse as the father of Sisamai. The biblical text provides no further details about Eleasah, and he is mentioned only here, serving primarily to link the next generation in the family line.
Sisamai is listed as the son of Eleasah. Like his father, Sisamai receives a single mention in the Scriptures, and no additional narrative or description is given about his life or role.
Shallum is recorded as the son of Sisamai. The name Shallum means “retribution” or “recompense.” Although several individuals named Shallum occur elsewhere in the Bible, this particular Shallum is distinguished only by his placement in Caleb’s lineage, and no further information about him is supplied.
The genealogies in Scripture serve several purposes: they trace family lines, establish connections to notable ancestors, and preserve the historical record of God’s people. In this passage, the inclusion of Eleasah, Sisamai, and Shallum secures the line of descent from Caleb, underscoring Caleb’s importance within the tribe of Judah.
While genealogical lists can be difficult to study and may not yield direct moral applications, they enrich our understanding of the biblical narrative. They reveal the continuity of God’s plan across generations, support the fulfillment of prophetic promises, and attest to the authenticity and careful preservation of the biblical text.
