1 Chronicles 2:5
The sonnes of Pharez: Hezron, and Hamul. 1 Chronicles 2:5 (KJV)
1 Chronicles is a book of the Old Testament classified among the historical books. Its primary focus is the genealogies of Israel and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. Chapter 2 offers a detailed genealogy of the descendants of Judah, one of Jacob’s twelve sons. In verse 5 the chronicler records the sons of Pharez—Hezron and Hamul. Pharez was one of the twin sons born to Judah and Tamar; Tamar’s story is recorded in Genesis 38, where she is identified as Judah’s daughter‑in‑law.
The reference to Hezron and Hamul is significant for several reasons. First, the term “sons” in biblical genealogies can sometimes denote descendants rather than immediate offspring, a nuance noted by the chronicler. Second, this brief list connects directly to the broader biblical narrative of messianic promise. In Genesis 49:10 Jacob prophesied that the scepter would not depart from Judah until the coming of the Messiah. By highlighting the line of Pharez, the chronicler affirms the fulfillment of that prophecy through the Davidic lineage, which ultimately culminates in Jesus Christ.
Both the New Testament Gospels of Matthew and Luke trace the ancestry of Jesus back to King David and further to Abraham, and Pharez occupies a key position in that chain, demonstrating Jesus’ descent from the tribe of Judah. Hezron, in particular, is noteworthy because he becomes the ancestor of David, Israel’s greatest king. David’s lineage is traced through Hezron’s son Ram (1 Chronicles 2:9‑15).
Overall, 1 Chronicles 2:5 serves as a bridge linking Israel’s past with its future hope. It reinforces God’s faithfulness in preserving the Davidic line and underscores the ultimate fulfillment of His salvation plan through the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ.
