1 Chronicles 21:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

At that time when David saw that the Lord had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

Context:In order to understand the significance of 1 Chronicles 21:28, it’s essential to consider its context. This verse is situated within the narrative of King David’s census of Israel, which was motivated by pride and resulted in God’s displeasure. The act of numbering the people was a sign of David’s self-reliance and desire for military strength. Consequently, God sent the prophet Gad to David, offering him three choices of punishment. David chose three days of pestilence, resulting in the death of 70,000 men.

David’s Repentance:After witnessing the devastating consequences of his actions, David realized his grave error and repented before God. In the preceding verses, we see David pleading with God for mercy and acknowledging his sinfulness. Moved by David’s repentance, God commanded the angel executing the pestilence to cease.

The Threshingfloor of Ornan:In verse 28, we find David at the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. This location is significant because it is the site where the angel stopped after David’s repentance. The threshingfloor was an area used for separating the grain from the chaff after the harvest. It was a place associated with agricultural abundance and provision.

David’s Sacrifice:When David witnessed God’s response and the angel’s halt at the threshingfloor of Ornan, he recognized the significance of the moment. It was a moment of divine intervention and mercy. To express his gratitude and devotion to God, David offered a sacrifice at that very location. This act of sacrifice symbolized David’s desire to honor God and acknowledge His sovereignty.

Lessons and Application:1 Chronicles 21:28 teaches us several important lessons:

  • The Consequences of Sin:David’s sin had severe consequences, resulting in the loss of many lives. It reminds us of the seriousness of our actions and the potential impact they can have on others.
  • The Power of Repentance:David’s sincere repentance moved God to show mercy and withhold further judgment. It demonstrates the importance of genuine repentance when we recognize our sins and turn to God in humility.
  • Gratitude and Sacrifice:David’s response to God’s mercy was to offer a sacrifice. It serves as a reminder that a grateful heart should lead to acts of worship and devotion. We can express our gratitude through praise, thanksgiving, and offering ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1).
  • God’s Provision and Mercy:The threshingfloor of Ornan represents a place of divine intervention. It reminds us that God’s mercy can halt judgment, and He provides for our needs in unexpected ways. It encourages us to seek God’s presence, trust in His provision, and acknowledge His sovereignty.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 21:28 highlights David’s repentance, God’s mercy, and David’s response of gratitude and sacrifice. It emphasizes the consequences of sin, the importance of repentance, and the power of God’s provision and mercy. As we study this verse, we can reflect on our own lives, seeking to cultivate repentance, gratitude, and a deepening relationship with God.
