1 Chronicles 21:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And Dauid saide vnto God, I haue sinned greatly, because I haue done this thing: but uow, I beseech thee, doe away the iniquitie of thy seruant, for I haue done very foolishly. 1 Chronicles 21:8 (KJV)

In this verse, we find King David acknowledging his sin before God. Prior to this, David had ordered a census of the people of Israel, which was a sinful act because it demonstrated a lack of trust in God’s provision and sought to exalt the power of the king rather than God. David later repented and confessed his wrongdoing before God.

Acknowledging Sin:

David openly admits his great sin, recognizing that what he had done was foolish. This demonstrates his humility and contrite heart before God. It is important to acknowledge our sins before God, taking responsibility for our actions and recognizing the need for forgiveness.

Confession and Repentance:

David not only acknowledges his sin but also confesses it before God. He confesses that he has sinned greatly and recognizes the gravity of his actions. Confession involves speaking the truth about our sins, humbling ourselves before God, and seeking His forgiveness. David’s confession is a model for us to follow when we realize our own wrongdoing.

Seeking Forgiveness:

David pleads with God to “do away the iniquity” of his servant, recognizing that only God has the power to cleanse him from his transgressions. He also petitions that the plague be removed, saying, “let the people be taken away,” reflecting his deep awareness of his need for God’s mercy. Likewise, when we sin, we should approach God with a repentant heart, trusting that He is gracious and merciful.

Learning from David’s Example:

David’s response to his sin teaches us important lessons. It reminds us of the need to constantly evaluate our actions and motivations, seeking to align them with God’s will. When we fall short, as David did, we must be willing to admit our mistakes, confess our sins, and turn back to God in repentance. God is always ready to forgive and restore us when we approach Him with genuine remorse and a desire to change.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 21:8 provides a valuable lesson in humility, repentance, and seeking God’s forgiveness. It encourages us to acknowledge our sins, confess them before God, and seek His mercy.
