1 Chronicles 22:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles provides a historical account of the lineage of King David and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. In this particular chapter, David is making preparations for building the temple of the Lord, even though he would not be the one to construct it himself. Instead, he gathers resources and instructs his son Solomon, who would succeed him as king, to undertake the task.

Significance of the verse:

  • Abundance of resources: The verse begins by highlighting the abundance of gold, silver, brass, and iron that David had gathered for the temple construction. This emphasizes David’s commitment and investment in preparing a magnificent place for the worship of God. It also reflects the generous contributions of the people who willingly offered their resources for the work of the Lord.
  • Call to action: Following the mention of the abundant resources, David encourages Solomon to take action, saying, Arise therefore, and be doing. David understood that the task of building the temple was not simply about accumulating materials, but also about putting them to use. He urges Solomon to take charge and begin the work that God had entrusted to them.
  • Divine assurance: In the latter part of the verse, David acknowledges that success in this endeavor is not solely dependent on human effort but requires the presence and guidance of the Lord. He concludes by saying, and the LORD be with thee. This statement reflects David’s reliance on God’s divine presence and blessing for the accomplishment of the task. It serves as a reminder that, no matter how well-prepared or skilled we are, our ultimate success comes from God’s favour and guidance.

Application:

  • Stewardship:David’s commitment to gathering resources for the temple teaches us about the importance of stewardship. We are called to use our resources wisely for the work of God and His kingdom. This includes not only material possessions but also our time, talents, and abilities. We should be willing to contribute and invest in endeavours that honour and glorify God.
  • Taking action:David’s exhortation to Solomon to arise therefore, and be doing is a reminder for us to be proactive in our service to God. It’s not enough to have good intentions or accumulate resources; we need to take action. We should be diligent and faithful in carrying out the tasks and responsibilities that God has entrusted to us, whether it’s in our personal lives, families, churches, or communities.
  • Dependence on God:While we are called to be active participants in God’s work, we must always recognise our dependence on Him. David’s prayer for the Lord to be with Solomon acknowledges that true success comes from God’s presence and guidance. As we engage in various endeavours, we should seek God’s wisdom, guidance, and empowerment, knowing that without Him, our efforts are in vain.

Remember, the broader context of 1 Chronicles 22 provides further insights into the significance of this verse, so it’s beneficial to study the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of David’s preparations for the temple and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty.
