1 Chronicles 22:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And Dauid saide to Solomon; My sonne, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house vnto the Name of the Lord my God. 1 Chronicles 22:7 (KJV)

In this study we first read the verse and then consider its context and application. The book of 1 Chronicles records the reign of King David and his preparations for the temple that would later be built in Jerusalem. In 1 Chronicles 22:7 David is speaking directly to his son Solomon, who would become the next king of Israel.

David’s Desire to Build the Temple: David, a man after God’s own heart, longed to build a permanent house for the Lord, a dwelling place for the Ark of the Covenant. Although he felt this desire deeply, God had already chosen Solomon to carry out the work (see 1 Chronicles 17:11‑12). David’s genuine intention is evident, yet God’s plan placed the responsibility on Solomon, emphasizing the divine appointment for this great task.

David’s Fatherly Advice: In this verse David openly shares his personal aspiration to build the house for the name of the LORD. By doing so he is transparent about his own longing and offers guidance to Solomon. The exchange reveals David’s wisdom and humility as a father, acknowledging Solomon’s anointing and submitting to God’s sovereign choice.

Lessons for Us:

  • Recognition of God’s Sovereignty – David’s willingness to accept God’s choice and to support Solomon shows a profound respect for divine sovereignty. It reminds believers to trust God’s plans even when they differ from personal ambitions.
  • Parental Guidance – The conversation models the responsibility of parents (or mentors) to counsel the younger generation in matters of faith, sharing experiences and desires that shape spiritual growth.
  • Worship and Devotion – David’s commitment to preparing for the temple underscores the importance of dedicating ourselves to worship and honoring the Lord, seeking ways to serve and glorify Him in our lives.

Application:

Reflect on whether you recognize and accept God’s sovereignty in your life, especially when His direction diverges from your own plans. Consider how you might actively guide and support the spiritual development of those entrusted to your care. Ask yourself how you can demonstrate devotion to God in practical ways, both individually and within your faith community.
