1 Chronicles 23:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And the sonnes of Eliezer were: Rehabiah the chiefe. And Eliezer had none other sonnes: but the sonnes of Rehabiah were very many. 1 Chronicles 23:17 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a larger passage in 1 Chronicles that records the organization and divisions of the Levites for service in the tabernacle and later in the temple. In the verse we meet the descendants of Eliezer, who is identified as a descendant of Aaron, Moses’ brother, placing him within the priestly line of Aaron. That lineage was significant because the Aaronic priesthood bore responsibility for the religious duties and offerings in the sanctuary.

The text highlights Rehabiah as the chief among the sons of Eliezer. By calling him chief, the passage indicates that Rehabiah held a prominent leadership position within the priestly division that descended from Eliezer. His role would have carried considerable responsibilities and authority in the administration of priestly duties.

The verse also notes that Eliezer had no other sons besides Rehabiah. This detail underscores Rehabiah’s importance as the sole inheritor of Eliezer’s lineage and responsibilities, emphasizing the continuity of the priestly line through him.

Finally, the passage records that the sons of Rehabiah were very many. The growth of Rehabiah’s descendants suggests that his family multiplied over time, likely as a result of faithful service and adherence to their priestly obligations. The abundance of his offspring would have contributed to the strength and stability of the priestly division.

Overall, the verse illustrates the careful organization and prominence of the priestly (and broader Levitical) divisions within the tribe of Levi, especially the lineage of Eliezer and his son Rehabiah. By studying such passages we gain insight into the historical context, the roles of key individuals, and the importance of preserving the priestly heritage that undergirded Israel’s worship practices.
