1 Chronicles 23:19
Of the sonnes of Hebron, Ieriah the first, Amariah the second, Iahaziel the third, and Iekamiam the fourth. 1 Chronicles 23:19 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles gives a detailed account of the genealogy and organization of the Levites, the priestly tribe of Israel. In chapter 23 the writer records the descendants of Hebron, a Levite who was a son of Kohath, and thus an ancestor of a distinct Levitical clan.
Hebron also carries historical and spiritual significance as a city in the hill country of Judah, the place where Abraham settled and was buried, and later allotted to the Levites as an inheritance (see Joshua 21:11‑13). This dual reference—both to a person and to a city—highlights the deep roots of the Levitical families in Israel’s history.
The verse lists four sons of Hebron: Jeriah, Amariah, Jahaziel, and Jekameam. These individuals were members of the Levitical clan of Hebron and were assigned various duties related to the worship and service of God in the tabernacle or temple.
Although the passage appears to be a simple genealogical record, it underscores the importance of individual roles and responsibilities within the community of faith. Each Levite had a designated task in the service of God, and their faithful performance was essential for the proper functioning of worship.
This teaches that every person has a unique role to play within the body of Christ today. Our differing gifts, talents, and responsibilities, when exercised faithfully, contribute to the overall health and effectiveness of the church. The verse also demonstrates the value of organization and order in worship; the division of duties among the Levites ensured that worship was carried out efficiently and reverently.
Application for believers includes recognizing and appreciating the uniqueness of our own roles within the church—whether as leaders, teachers, encouragers, or in other capacities—and striving for order and cooperation in our service to God. By diligently fulfilling our responsibilities, we help create an environment where God is honoured and His work advanced.
