1 Chronicles 23:25
For David said, The Lord God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:
1 Chronicles 23:25 (KJV)
Context
David spoke these words while organizing the Levites for their temple duties. For years the tabernacle had moved from place to place, but now God had given Israel rest from surrounding enemies. This rest allowed the people to settle in Jerusalem, the city God chose for His name. The verse marks a clear turning point from wandering to permanent worship.
Meaning
The declaration that “The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people” shows that rest is a gift from God, not something Israel earned. This rest means both peace from enemies and spiritual stability. The promise that they “may dwell in Jerusalem for ever” points to a lasting relationship between God and His people. Jerusalem becomes the place where God’s presence would dwell permanently, and the temple would stand as a sign of that covenant.
Biblical connections
This rest looks forward to the rest that Christ gives to believers. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest, a rest that is spiritual and frees people from the burden of sin. The permanence of Jerusalem also foreshadows the new creation, where God will dwell with His people forever. The Levites’ service reminds us that God’s rest enables and orders our worship.
Application
God’s rest is a foundation for faithful service. When we receive His peace, we are free to serve Him without fear or distraction. We can trust that the rest He gives is secure, not dependent on our efforts. Our worship and daily work flow from this settled peace.
Reflection
Do we live as people who have received God’s rest? The verse calls us to thank God for His provision and to look forward to the eternal home He has prepared. That hope gives us stability and joy even in difficult times.
