1 Chronicles 25:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

The sixt to Bukkiah, he, his sons and his brethren were twelue. 1 Chronicles 25:13 (KJV)

The sixth to Bukkiah,

he, his sons, and his brethren,

were twelve: 1 Chronicles 25:13 (KJV)

The verse records that the sixth division of musicians was under the leadership of Bukkiah, together with his sons and his brethren, making a total of twelve members. This brief statement is situated within a larger chapter that details how King David organized the Levites for temple worship. The chapter explains that David appointed twenty‑four divisions of musicians for service in the house of the Lord, each division consisting of twelve individuals, giving a total of 288 musicians. The careful structuring of these groups shows the meticulous organization of the temple worship system, where each division had a designated leader responsible for overseeing the musical duties of his group.

The mention of Bukkiah’s sons and brethren highlights the hereditary nature of many Levitical roles. Family members often served together under a common leader, indicating that musical ministry was frequently passed down through generations. This familial pattern underscores the importance placed on continuity and tradition within the worship of God.

Music held a central place in Israel’s worship, serving as a form of praise and adoration to the Almighty. By assigning specific families and leaders to each musical division, the temple ensures that the worship experience was both orderly and richly expressive. The sixth division, like the others, contributed to the collective offering of sound that accompanied sacrifices and prayers.

Studying this verse and its context provides insight into the historical and cultural framework of ancient Israelite worship. It reveals how the Levites were organized, the significance of music in the liturgy, and the way responsibilities were entrusted to families who carried on the ministry across generations. The passage, though concise, reflects a broader commitment to reverent, structured, and heartfelt worship through song.
