1 Chronicles 25:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

The fifteenth to Ierimoth, hee, his sonnes & his brethren, were twelue: 1 Chronicles 25:22 (KJV)

The fifteenth to Jeremoth,

he, his sons, and his brethren,

were twelve: 1 Chronicles 25:22 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that focuses on the lineage of the Israelite tribes, particularly the tribe of Judah and its connection to King David. It provides a detailed account of the organization of the Levitical priesthood, the roles and responsibilities of the Levites, and the service they performed in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

In 1 Chronicles 25:1 we learn that David and the commanders of the army separated the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to serve as musicians in the house of the Lord. Asaph was one of the chief musicians appointed by King David to lead the musical worship in the tabernacle (1 Chronicles 6:39; 15:17‑19). The biblical text lists six sons of Asaph—Zechariah, Shebuel, Jibsam, Sheariah, Jehiel, and Mattithiah (1 Chronicles 25:4).

While Asaph is celebrated for his contributions to Israel’s worship through music and for authoring several Psalms, the Scriptures do not describe him as a prophet. The phrase “according to the order of the king” in 1 Chronicles 25:1‑2 refers to the organized musical service established by King David, not to a prophetic function.

The inclusion of Asaph’s family within the musical ministry underscores the significance of skillful, Spirit‑led worship. Their service demonstrates how music can be a vehicle for praising God and fostering communal devotion.

The example of Asaph and his sons encourages believers to employ their spiritual gifts and talents for God’s glory. They illustrate how musical abilities can be used to honor God and edify the community.

This passage highlights the connection between worship and attentiveness to God’s leading. It reminds us that worship involves both heartfelt expression and a readiness to hear God’s voice.

The mention of “the order of the king” indicates that the worship ministry operated within a structured framework under proper authority, emphasizing the value of orderly service when exercising spiritual gifts.

Asaph’s ministry was rooted in God’s anointing. Likewise, believers today should seek the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to operate in their spiritual gifts and ministries effectively.
