Context

Casting lots was a common way in ancient Israel to make decisions, using small stones or similar objects. The people believed that God directed the outcome, as Proverbs 16:33 affirms. The phrase “ward against ward” means that each group of musicians was matched with a corresponding group of priests for their weekly service.
