1 Chronicles 26:25

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

And his brethren by Eliezer: Rehabiah his sonne, and Ieshaiah his sonne, and Ioram his sonne, and Zichri his sonne, & Shelomith his sonne. 1 Chronicles 26:25 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a broader passage that records the division of duties among the Levites, who were entrusted with various responsibilities in the tabernacle and later in the temple during the reign of King David. The list presents a genealogy of Levites descending from Eliezer, and each name represents a family line that served in the sacred service.

Genealogy and Its Significance

The passage highlights a succession of sons—Rehabiah, Jeshaiah, Joram, Zichri, and Shelomith—each identified as the son of the previous. In Hebrew culture genealogies were essential for tracing ancestral heritage, confirming tribal affiliation, and assigning specific roles within the Levitical system. By preserving these records the chronicler ensures that the duties assigned to each family are recognized and passed down through generations.

Meaning of the Name Rehabiah

The name “Rehabiah” derives from the Hebrew root rachav, which Strong’s H7343 defines as “Yahweh has expanded” or “Yahweh has made wide.” It is also commonly understood to convey the idea that “the Lord has restored.” Both nuances point to God’s providential care and the restorative power of faithful worship.

The Importance of Family Continuity

The phrase “his brethren by Eliezer” underscores the close family connections that undergirded Levitical service. Responsibilities in the temple were often transmitted from one generation to the next, fostering continuity, shared purpose, and mutual support among family members. This generational fidelity is a recurring theme in Chronicles, illustrating how each generation builds upon the faithfulness of its predecessors.

Faithfulness Across Generations

By tracing the lineage through several generations, the verse reminds readers of the steadfast commitment of each family to God’s work. The dedication of one generation becomes the foundation for the next, creating an unbroken chain of service that sustains the spiritual life of the community.

Studying the Context

As with any biblical passage, examining the surrounding verses and chapters enriches understanding. Exploring the historical and cultural background, as well as the theological themes woven throughout 1 Chronicles, helps illuminate the significance of this genealogical record and its role in the larger narrative of Israel’s worship and covenant relationship with God.
