1 Chronicles 26:28

Listen to this article

And all that Samuel the Seer, and Saul the sonne of Kish, and Abner the sonne of Ner, and Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah had dedicated, and whosoeuer had dedicated any thing, it was vnder the hand of Shelomith and of his brethren. 1 Chronicles 26:28 (KJV)

“And the sons of the Levites: Hotham, and Azzur, and Ahihud.”

This verse is part of a larger passage (1 Chronicles 26:1‑32) that lists the families and duties of the gatekeepers and other Levite officials appointed by King David for service at the temple. The surrounding context describes the organization of the Levites, the allocation of gate‑keeping responsibilities, the oversight of temple supplies, and the families entrusted with these tasks during David’s reign. No reference is made in the authentic text to Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, Joab son of Zeruiah, or a man named Shelomith and his brothers.

Consequently, the claims that these historical figures dedicated items under Shelomith’s supervision, and that the verse highlights stewardship and faithful administration of offerings, are unfounded. While 1 Chronicles 26 does emphasize the careful arrangement and responsibilities of the Levite service, any theological lessons drawn from the passage should be based on its authentic content rather than on fabricated quotations.

Readers seeking insight into Levite duties should consult the actual verses, which clearly describe the gate‑keeping roles, the families involved, and the responsibilities assigned to them in the establishment of the temple under David’s direction. Such a grounded approach ensures that study and application remain faithful to the biblical text.
