1 Chronicles 28:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is primarily concerned with the genealogy and history of the Israelites, particularly the Davidic lineage. Chapter 28 focuses on David’s preparations for building the temple in Jerusalem, a task that would be fulfilled by his son Solomon. In verse 20, David addresses Solomon and offers him words of encouragement and instruction as he takes on this significant responsibility.

Verse:“And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord” (1 Chronicles 28:20, KJV).

Be strong and of good courage:David starts by urging Solomon to be strong and courageous. Building the temple was an immense undertaking, and it required not only physical strength but also spiritual fortitude. David understood the challenges Solomon would face and wanted to instil confidence in him. This exhortation suggests that relying on God’s strength and being brave were essential qualities for fulfilling God’s purposes.

Fear not, nor be dismayed:David encourages Solomon to not be afraid or discouraged. Fear and discouragement can hinder progress and lead to doubt. David wanted Solomon to trust in God’s promises and not allow fear to paralyse him. God’s presence would provide the assurance and guidance needed to complete the task successfully.

The Lord God will be with thee:David emphasises that Solomon would not undertake this work alone. The presence of God would accompany him throughout the entire process. This promise reflects the recurring theme in Scripture that God never abandons His people, especially when they are engaged in fulfilling His purposes.

He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee:David assures Solomon that God will not let him down or abandon him. This statement echoes the words of Moses to Joshua before he led the Israelites into the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 31:6). It emphasises God’s faithfulness and His commitment to seeing His plans through to completion. Solomon could trust in God’s unwavering support.

Until thou hast finished all the work:David’s encouragement extends to the entire duration of Solomon’s work on the temple. The construction of the temple was a significant undertaking that required meticulous planning and execution. David assures Solomon that God’s presence and assistance would be available until the work was fully completed. This highlights the importance of perseverance and reliance on God’s strength until the task is accomplished.

For the service of the house of the Lord:David reminds Solomon of the purpose behind building the temple. It was not merely a grand architectural project but a place dedicated to the worship and service of the Lord. The temple was to be a focal point of Israel’s spiritual life, and Solomon’s work was essential for facilitating that worship. This verse serves as a reminder that any work done for the Lord’s service is significant and should be approached with dedication and reverence.
