1 Chronicles 28:8
Now therefore in the sight of all Israel, the congregation of the Lord, and in the audience of our God, keepe, and seeke for all the commandements of the Lord your God, that ye may possesse this good land, and leaue it for an inheritance for your children after you, for euer. 1 Chronicles 28:8 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account of the lineage of David and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty in Israel. In this particular chapter David is nearing the end of his life and is preparing to hand over the responsibility of building the temple to his son, Solomon. In verse 8 David addresses the congregation of Israel and imparts important instructions regarding their relationship with God.
Importance of Observing God’s Commandments: David exhorts the people of Israel to “keep the commandments of the LORD.” He emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commandments, which are given to guide His people in righteous living and to establish a covenant relationship with them. By observing God’s commandments the Israelites would demonstrate their loyalty and commitment to God.
Public Witness: David emphasizes that the commandments should be kept “in the sight of all Israel” and that they be kept “that it may go well with you.” This underscores the importance of setting a public example of obedience to God. The Israelites were not only responsible for their personal relationship with God but also for being a testimony to the entire nation. Public observance would serve as a witness to others and encourage them to follow suit.
God’s Promises: David reminds the people that obedience to God’s commandments would lead to possessing the good land and dwelling therein, and that it may go well with them and increase for the good of Israel. The Promised Land was a significant blessing that God had bestowed upon the Israelites, and its possession was contingent upon their obedience. By obeying God’s commandments they would secure the blessings of God not only for themselves but also for future generations.
Application: Although this passage was specifically addressed to the people of Israel at that time, it carries broader implications for believers today. As Christians we are called to live in obedience to God’s commandments as revealed in the Scriptures. Jesus affirmed the importance of obedience when He said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Our obedience should not be limited to private devotion but should also be evident in our public lives, serving as a witness to others. Just as the Israelites looked forward to inheriting the Promised Land, we as believers have the promise of eternal life and an inheritance in Christ. Our obedience to God’s commandments is an expression of our love for Him and a demonstration of our desire to honor His will.
In conclusion 1 Chronicles 28:8 reminds us of the significance of obedience to God’s commandments, the importance of setting a public example, and the blessings that come with faithful obedience. May we seek to honor God by faithfully obeying His commandments in both our private and public lives, leaving a godly inheritance for future generations.
