1 Chronicles 29:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

O Lord our God, all this store that we haue prepared to build thee an house for thine holy Name, commeth of thine hand, and is all thine owne. 1 Chronicles 29:16 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles records the reign of King David and, in its twenty‑ninth chapter, presents David’s heartfelt address to the assembly of leaders, priests, and the people concerning the building of the temple in Jerusalem. In this setting David calls the nation to unite in the sacred task of constructing a house for the Lord’s holy name, emphasizing the collective desire to honor God through this monumental work.

In verse 16 David acknowledges that the resources gathered for the temple are not merely human possessions but come directly from God’s hand and belong to Him. While the wording of the quotation does not match the exact phrasing of the King James Version, the underlying truth remains: David affirms God’s sovereignty and providence over all that has been prepared. This acknowledgment reflects a profound understanding that every material contribution is ultimately God’s, underscoring His ownership of all creation.

David’s declaration also expresses deep gratitude and a sense of stewardship. By recognizing that the store of wealth and materials is “all thine own,” he models a thankful heart that sees the blessings received as gifts from God rather than personal assets. This perspective teaches believers to view themselves as caretakers of God’s provisions, encouraging a posture of humility and thankfulness in the management of resources entrusted to us.

Furthermore, the verse conveys David’s trust in God’s continued provision. By attributing the entire supply to God’s hand, he demonstrates confidence that the nation’s ability to amass the necessary wealth for the temple is rooted in divine blessing and faithfulness. This trust invites believers to rely on God’s generosity, knowing that the capacity to give and to build for His glory stems from His gracious provision.
