1 Chronicles 29:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And he died in a good old age, full of dayes, riches and honour: and Solomon his sonne reigned in his stead. 1 Chronicles 29:28 (KJV)

Chronicles 28 and 29 bring to a close the narrative of King David’s preparations for the temple in Jerusalem, a work he entrusted to his son Solomon. In chapter 28 David gathers the nation to contribute generously for the building, and he offers a prayer of thanksgiving and praise. Chapter 29 concludes with a summary of David’s life, his death, and the orderly transition of the throne to Solomon.

The verse reads, “And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.” This statement encapsulates several key themes.

First, it portrays a fulfilled and complete life. David’s death “in a good old age, full of days” signals a long, satisfying span marked by God’s provision, while the note that he “slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David” (as recorded elsewhere) underscores the natural conclusion of his earthly journey.

Second, the passage highlights God’s blessings and faithfulness. The description of David’s “riches and honour” reflects the prosperity and respect that accompanied his faithful service, demonstrating the Lord’s steadfast favor throughout David’s reign.

Third, the succession to Solomon emphasizes legacy. David’s careful preparation of his son ensured that the monumental task of building the temple would continue, illustrating the importance of passing on faith, values, and wisdom to the next generation.

Fourth, the transition underscores God’s sovereignty. The smooth handover of power affirms that God orchestrates the rise and fall of kings according to His divine plan.

Application:

Seek to live a purposeful life that pleases God, reflecting on the blessings He has bestowed. Invest in future generations by imparting your faith and wisdom. In moments of change or uncertainty, trust that God remains sovereign and in control. May deeper insights emerge as you study this verse and related passages, revealing the enduring truths of God’s Word.
