1 Chronicles 29:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD?”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account of the reign of King David and his preparations for the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. In this particular chapter, David is making extensive preparations for the construction of the temple, and he encourages the people of Israel to contribute willingly and generously.

Generosity and Willingness:In verse 5, David emphasises the importance of contributing willingly and generously to the work of the Lord. He mentions gold and silver, which were valuable resources that would be used in the construction of the temple. However, the verse goes beyond material resources and addresses the willingness to consecrate one’s service to the Lord.

Consecration:David challenges the people by asking, “And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD?” This statement implies that true service to the Lord involves consecration, which means setting oneself apart for sacred purposes. It requires a devoted heart and a willingness to surrender to God’s will.

Sacrifice and Artistry:David mentions the involvement of skilled artisans in creating the various works for the temple. This verse acknowledges the importance of craftsmanship and artistic skills in the service of God. The resources contributed by the people would be used by these artisans to create beautiful and intricate works for the temple.

Application:As believers today, we can draw several lessons from this verse:

  • Generous Giving:Just as the people of Israel were encouraged to give generously for the construction of the temple, we are also called to give willingly and generously to support the work of God’s kingdom. This includes financial resources, time, talents, and skills.
  • Consecration of Service:Our service to the Lord should be characterised by consecration. We need to dedicate ourselves wholly to God’s purposes, seeking to align our lives with His will and seeking to bring glory to His name.
  • Recognising God-given Skills:David’s mention of skilled artisans reminds us that God has given each of us unique talents and abilities. We should recognise and utilise these gifts in the service of God and His people, whether it be in artistic endeavours, leadership, teaching, or other areas of service.
  • The Heart of Worship:Ultimately, the verse highlights the heart behind our giving and service. It is not just about the physical materials or external actions; it is about the attitude of our hearts. We are called to worship God with our whole being, giving Him our best in every aspect of our lives.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 29:5 reminds us of the importance of generous giving, consecration, and utilising our God-given skills in the service of the Lord. It challenges us to examine our hearts and consider how we can contribute wholeheartedly to the work of God’s kingdom.
