1 Chronicles 5:11
And the children of Gad dwelt ouer against them, in the land of Bashan vnto Salchah. 1 Chronicles 5:11 (KJV)
Context: The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that traces the genealogy and history of the people of Israel, particularly the twelve tribes. This verse focuses on the descendants of Gad, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob and a tribe of Israel.
The Tribe of Gad:
The children of Gad were a part of the Israelites who settled in the Transjordan region after their exodus from Egypt. They were allotted an inheritance of land east of the Jordan River. The territory mentioned here is “the land of Bashan unto Salcah.” Bashan was an area known for its fertile pastures and was located east of the Jordan River. Salcah was a city within that region.
Inheritance of Gad:
According to the instructions given by Moses in the book of Numbers (Numbers 32:1-5), the tribe of Gad desired to settle in the land of Bashan due to its suitability for their livestock. As a result, Moses granted Gad, along with the tribe of Reuben and half of the tribe of Manasseh, the land east of the Jordan as their inheritance. This region was known for its abundant grazing land.
The Conquest of the Transjordan:
Before the children of Gad could fully inhabit their allotted land, the Israelites, led by Moses, conquered the Transjordan region, defeating Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan (Numbers 21:21-35). After this victory, the children of Gad settled in their designated territories east of the Jordan River.
Significance:
This verse serves as a record of the fulfillment of God’s promise to the tribe of Gad regarding their inheritance. It highlights the faithfulness of God in giving each tribe its portion of the land as He had promised to their ancestors.
