1 Chronicles 5:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

Beerah his sonne: whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, carried away captiue: He was Prince of the Reubenites. 1 Chronicles 5:6 (KJV)

The Book of Chronicles is a historical account of the people of Israel, concentrating on genealogies and the reigns of the kings of Judah. It stresses faithfulness to God’s covenant and records the events that shaped the nation. Chapter 5 focuses on the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half‑tribe of Manasseh, describing their settlements, families, and military organization.

In 1 Chronicles 5:6 the verse records Beerah, son of a Reubenite, who was taken captive by the Assyrian king Tilgath‑pilneser and identified as a prince of the Reubenites. The surrounding verses of the chapter list the families dwelling in the hill country of Gilead and, in a later passage, give the number of men able for war—forty‑four thousand six hundred and fifty—armed with bucklers, swords, bows, and coats of mail. Although the name Hotham does not appear in verse 6, it is mentioned later in the chapter as a descendant of Reuben.

Key themes emerge from these details.

First, military preparedness is highlighted: the tribes possessed organized forces, proper weapons, and the ability to mobilize quickly for defense. Second, unity and strength are evident in the combined might of the three tribal groups, showing how cooperation amplifies effectiveness against external threats. Third, leadership, even when not named in this specific verse, is underscored by the broader chapter’s reference to figures such as Hotham, reminding readers of the importance of capable leaders who guide and organize the community. Fourth, genealogy and heritage are repeatedly emphasized, preserving ancestral records that give identity and continuity to the people.

Application for today follows naturally.

Recognizing strength in unity encourages believers to work together toward common goals, whether in the church, family, or society, thereby becoming more resilient. Preparing for challenges—spiritual, emotional, or practical—mirrors the tribes’ readiness for battle; believers are called to equip themselves with God’s Word, prayer, and sound doctrine. Valuing historical and genealogical context helps us appreciate the struggles and triumphs of those who came before, fostering humility and gratitude. Finally, discerning and honoring effective leadership within our communities reflects the biblical principle that wise leaders sustain and protect the flock. Together, these lessons from 1 Chronicles 5:6 invite us to honor our heritage, stand united, and remain spiritually prepared for the battles we face.
