1 Chronicles 9:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And of the Leuites: Shemaiah the sonne of Hasshub, the sonne of Azrikam, the sonne of Hashabiah, of the sonnes of Merari. 1 Chronicles 9:14 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record of the genealogies and events of the Israelites, with a particular focus on the tribe of Judah and the reign of King David. This verse is part of a genealogical list of the Levites who were involved in various duties related to the worship and service of God.

The Levites were a tribe set apart for religious service in ancient Israel. They descended from Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). Unlike the other tribes, the Levites were not given a specific portion of land; instead they were scattered throughout Israel’s cities and towns to assist with religious responsibilities, such as assisting the priests in the tabernacle and later the temple, performing music, and teaching the people about God’s law.

The verse mentions Shemaiah, a Levite from the family line of Merari. The Merarites were one of the three main divisions of the Levites, along with the Kohathites and the Gershonites. While the preceding verse lists the Merarite families, this verse does not explicitly label Shemaiah as a Merarite, but his inclusion among the Merarite genealogy is evident.

The genealogy provided is clear: Shemaiah’s father was Hasshub, his grandfather was Azrikam, and his great‑grandfather was Hashabiah. Genealogies were significant in Israelite culture for establishing family connections, inheritance rights, and priestly lineages, ensuring that service to God remained within the appointed families.

Overall, this verse gives a glimpse into the genealogy and background of a Levite named Shemaiah, who was part of the Levitical service in ancient Israel. It reminds us of the value of our heritage and the importance of serving God in our respective roles today.
