1 Chronicles 9:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

And Phinehas the sonne of Eleazar was the ruler ouer them in time past, and the Lord was with him. 1 Chronicles 9:20 (KJV)

and the Lord

was with him. 1 Chronicles 9:20 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles records the genealogies and historical events of Israel, and chapter 9 specifically lists the families of the returning exiles who settled in Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. In this context the verse highlights the role of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, among the post‑exilic community.

Phinehas was a notable figure in Israel’s history. He was the grandson of Aaron, the brother of Moses, and served as a priest. He first gained fame for his zealous action in Numbers 25:6‑15, when he stopped an Israelite man from committing sexual immorality with a Midianite woman, thereby averting God’s wrath.

The verse describes Phinehas as “the ruler over them” (or “the ruler over the house of God” in another rendering). Though the passage does not detail his specific duties, his position implies authority over religious affairs and the enforcement of God’s laws, consistent with his priestly lineage.

“The LORD was with him” signals that God’s presence and favor accompanied Phinehas. This divine accompaniment suggests a close relationship with God, granting him guidance, protection, and the empowerment needed to fulfill his responsibilities faithfully.

From this passage we learn the importance of zealousness for righteousness. Phinehas’ decisive action demonstrates a fervent passion for upholding God’s standards, encouraging believers today to stand against sin in their own lives and societies.

God’s presence also strengthens and guides leaders. As Phinehas experienced divine support, believers can trust that obedience and seeking God’s presence will bring wisdom, protection, and encouragement in every role they assume.

Faithfulness in leadership is another key lesson. Although the text does not enumerate Phinehas’ specific acts as ruler, his appointment reflects a trustworthy stewardship of authority, urging modern leaders to serve diligently and honorably.

Finally, the emphasis on Phinehas’ lineage underscores the significance of genealogical continuity in God’s covenant. By recording the descendants of the priestly families, 1 Chronicles reminds us of God’s faithfulness across generations and His purpose to work through families to accomplish divine plans.
