1 Corinthians 1:16

And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. 1 Corinthians 1:16 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote the letter of 1 Corinthians to the church in Corinth, addressing various issues and providing instructions on Christian living and unity within the body of Christ. In this verse Paul discusses his baptism of the household of Stephanas.

Baptism in the New Testament is an important practice in the Christian faith, representing a believer’s identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3‑5). It symbolizes a person’s repentance from sin and their decision to follow Christ. Baptism is a public declaration of faith and an outward sign of an inward transformation.

The Household of Stephanas: the word “household” indicates that more than one person was included in the baptism. Stephanas, possibly the head of the household, along with his family members, made a conscious decision to be baptized and publicly proclaim their faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul’s Uncertainty: Paul goes on to say, “besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.” Here he acknowledges that he does not recall baptizing anyone else in Corinth besides the household of Stephanas. He is not minimizing the significance of baptism but emphasizing the centrality of the gospel message and the unity of believers in Christ.

Baptism is an essential step of obedience for believers who have put their faith in Jesus Christ. It is a public declaration of faith, symbolizing the believer’s identification with Christ.

Baptism often extends beyond the individual, as seen in the case of the household of Stephanas. The faith of one person can impact and influence their entire family.

Paul’s emphasis on not recalling whom else he may have baptized highlights the importance of unity within the body of Christ. The focus should not be on who baptized whom, but on the essential message of the gospel and the unity of believers in Christ.

Application: If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior but have not been baptized, consider taking this important step of obedience and publicly declaring your faith. Recognize the influence your faith can have on your family and loved ones. Pray for their salvation and be a living example of Christ’s love and grace. Remember that unity in the body of Christ is crucial; avoid unnecessary divisions or arguments that distract from the central message of the gospel.
