For there must bee also heresies among you, that they which are approued may be made manifest among you. 1 Corinthians 11:19 (KJV)

Context: The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to address various issues within the church in Corinth. In this particular chapter, Paul discusses the importance of maintaining proper order and decorum during public worship, including the issue of head coverings for both men and women in verses 2‑16, and the observance of the Lord’s Supper in verses 17‑34.

The Purpose of Heresies: In verse 19, Paul states that “there must be also heresies among you.” The term “heresies” refers to divisions or factions within the church, not necessarily outright false teachings. While it may seem counterintuitive, Paul suggests that these factions serve a purpose within the church community.

Testing and Discernment: Paul explains that the presence of heresies or factions can reveal those who are truly approved or genuine in their faith. When divisions arise, it becomes necessary for believers to discern the truth and stand firm in sound doctrine. This testing process helps to identify individuals who genuinely adhere to the teachings of Christ and remain steadfast in their beliefs.

The Manifestation of the Approved: The purpose of these factions is to make manifest or reveal those who are genuinely approved by God. As divisions emerge, those who are truly faithful and grounded in the truth of God’s Word become evident to the rest of the church community. Their commitment to the teachings of Christ and their ability to discern falsehoods set them apart.

The Importance of Unity: While heresies may serve a purpose in revealing genuine believers, it is essential for the church to remain unified in its pursuit of truth. Paul emphasizes the need for unity and discernment to ensure that the church remains faithful to the teachings of Christ. He also stresses respect for God‑given roles in worship, urging men and women to observe proper head coverings, and calls for proper conduct and unity during the Lord’s Supper, so that the body of Christ may stand together in love and truth.
