1 Corinthians 12:31

Listen to this article

“But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.”

Context:Before diving into a specific verse, it’s important to understand the broader context. The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to address various issues and challenges faced by the Corinthian church. In chapter 12, Paul discusses spiritual gifts and their proper use within the body of Christ.

Verse:“But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” (1 Corinthians 12:31, KJV).

Coveting the Best Gifts:In this verse, Paul encourages the Corinthians to “covet earnestly the best gifts.” This does not advocate for a selfish or envious desire for gifts, but rather emphasizes the importance of desiring spiritual gifts that benefit the body of Christ and promote its well-being. It signifies a fervent pursuit of the gifts that will enable believers to effectively serve God and others.

A More Excellent Way:The second part of the verse states, “and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” This leads into the subsequent chapter, where Paul introduces the famous passage on love in 1 Corinthians 13. He highlights love as the supreme virtue and the foundation for the exercise of spiritual gifts.

The Priority of Love:By stating that there is a “more excellent way,” Paul reminds the Corinthians that the pursuit of spiritual gifts must be grounded in love. Without love, the gifts lose their purpose and effectiveness. The following chapter beautifully explains the characteristics and importance of love in the life of a believer.

Application:From this verse, we can draw a few practical applications:

  • Seek Spiritual Gifts:Believers are encouraged to earnestly desire spiritual gifts. However, this pursuit should always be guided by love and the edification of the body of Christ.
  • Prioritize Love:Love should be the overarching motivation and guiding principle in the use of spiritual gifts. Our actions and service should be rooted in genuine love for God and others.
  • Balanced Perspective:While desiring spiritual gifts, we should remember that love is the most excellent way. It is through love that we can effectively utilize and exercise the gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit.

Remember to explore the surrounding verses and consult various translations to gain a deeper understanding of the passage. Additionally, it’s beneficial to seek guidance from trusted pastors, teachers, or commentaries for further insight into the specific context and application of the verse.
