1 Corinthians 14:11

Listen to this article

“If I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.”

Context:The context of this verse is the discussion of speaking in tongues and the need for interpretation. Paul encourages the Corinthians to pursue spiritual gifts that build up the church rather than focusing solely on their personal experiences. He urges them to prioritise edification and understanding within the community.

Mutual Understanding:In verse 11, Paul highlights the importance of understanding and meaning in communication. He uses the term “barbarian” to convey the idea of someone who speaks an unintelligible language. If a person does not understand the meaning of the words spoken, they will view the speaker as a “barbarian” and vice versa. This underscores the need for clear communication within the church.

Edification and Order:Throughout this chapter, Paul emphasises the importance of using spiritual gifts, including tongues, for the edification and building up of the church. He encourages the Corinthians to use the gift of interpretation alongside the gift of speaking in tongues so that the entire congregation can understand and be edified.

Love and Unity:Understanding and mutual edification are rooted in love and unity. Paul’s overarching message is to prioritise love and the common good of the community over personal spiritual experiences. The use of spiritual gifts should always be exercised in a way that promotes unity and builds up the body of Christ.
