1 Corinthians 14:13

Listen to this article

“Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.”

Context:The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to address various issues within the church in Corinth. In this particular chapter, Paul discusses the importance of using spiritual gifts, specifically the gift of speaking in tongues, in a way that edifies the church.

1 Corinthians 14:13 focuses on the practice of speaking in an unknown tongue or language, which was a common occurrence in the early church. However, Paul emphasizes that if someone speaks in tongues, they should also pray for the ability to interpret what they are saying.

Speaking in an Unknown Tongue:Speaking in tongues refers to a spiritual gift bestowed by the Holy Spirit, enabling a person to communicate in a language they have not learned. It can manifest as either a known human language or an unknown spiritual language understood only by God. The purpose of this gift is to build up and encourage the church.

Praying for Interpretation:While speaking in tongues is beneficial for personal edification (1 Corinthians 14:4), when exercised in a public setting, it should be accompanied by interpretation. Interpretation allows the congregation to understand the message being conveyed, and it ensures that the spiritual gift benefits others as well.

By urging those who speak in tongues to pray for interpretation, Paul emphasizes the importance of clarity and understanding within the church. Without interpretation, the gift of tongues may cause confusion and hinder the edification of the body of believers.

  • Seek Understanding:If you have the gift of speaking in tongues, it is essential to pray for the ability to interpret what you are saying. This will enable you to edify and benefit others in a corporate worship setting.
  • Balanced Worship:The exercise of spiritual gifts, including tongues, should be done in an orderly and edifying manner. Seek a balance between personal edification and the edification of the church as a whole.
  • Unity and Clarity:The primary purpose of spiritual gifts is to build up the body of Christ. Therefore, prioritize communication and understanding within the church community, ensuring that the gifts are used in a way that promotes unity and clarity.
  • Dependence on the Holy Spirit:Remember that the gift of interpretation is a work of the Holy Spirit. As you pray for interpretation, rely on the guidance and empowerment of the Spirit to use your spiritual gifts effectively.

In 1 Corinthians 14:13, Paul encourages those who speak in tongues to also pray for the ability to interpret what they are saying. This passage emphasizes the importance of understanding and clarity within the church. By seeking interpretation, believers can ensure that the use of spiritual gifts, including tongues, edifies and benefits the entire congregation.
