1 Corinthians 15:9

Listen to this article

“For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.”

Historical Context: The Apostle Paul wrote the First Epistle to the Corinthians, addressing various issues within the Corinthian church. In this particular verse, Paul is reflecting on his own apostleship and acknowledging his unworthiness for the role due to his past actions of persecuting the church.

  • Personal Humility: Paul begins by stating, “For I am the least of the apostles.” Despite his significant role as an apostle and his numerous contributions to the early Christian movement, Paul maintains a humble perspective. This humility is a vital characteristic in Christian leadership and serves as an example for believers today.

Paul continues, “that am not meet to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God.” Here, Paul openly acknowledges his past persecution of the Church. Before his conversion, Paul (then known as Saul) actively pursued and persecuted early Christians, condoning their arrests and even executions. However, after his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-19), he became a zealous follower of Christ.

God’s Grace and Redemption: By acknowledging his past sins and emphasizing his unworthiness, Paul highlights the transforming power of God’s grace and redemption. Despite his prior actions, God chose him and called him to be an apostle, demonstrating His ability to forgive, cleanse, and use individuals for His purposes.

Encouragement for Believers: This verse can be a source of encouragement for all believers. It reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace and that our past mistakes or sins do not disqualify us from God’s love and service. Just as God called and used Paul, He can work through us, no matter how unworthy we may feel.

Service and Dedication: Paul’s recognition of his unworthiness did not hinder his commitment to serve God and advance His Kingdom. Throughout his ministry, Paul demonstrated unwavering dedication and worked tirelessly to spread the gospel. His example encourages believers to pursue God’s calling in their lives, even if they feel inadequate or unworthy.

Gratitude and Appreciation: This verse also prompts us to reflect on the magnitude of God’s grace and express gratitude for His mercy and forgiveness. Paul’s gratitude for being called to apostleship, despite his past, serves as a reminder for us to appreciate the salvation and opportunities we have received through Christ.

Overall, 1 Corinthians 15:9 provides valuable insights into humility, the power of God’s grace, and the potential for transformation in the lives of believers. It encourages us to embrace our calling, recognizing that God’s grace can work through our imperfections and past mistakes.
