Listen to this article

“All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.”

Context:The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to address various issues within the Corinthian church. In this particular chapter, Paul discusses the collection of offerings for the saints in Jerusalem and his plans to visit Corinth. He concludes the letter by sending greetings from various individuals and urging the Corinthians to greet one another with a holy kiss.

Certainly! Let’s dive into a Bible study on 1 Corinthians 16:20 in the King James Version (KJV). This verse states:

The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to address various issues within the Corinthian church. In this particular chapter, Paul discusses the collection of offerings for the saints in Jerusalem and his plans to visit Corinth. He concludes the letter by sending greetings from various individuals and urging the Corinthians to greet one another with a holy kiss.

Greeting with a holy kiss:In the Greco-Roman culture of the time, it was common for people to greet one another with a kiss on the cheek. However, Paul adds the qualifier “holy” to emphasize the nature and purpose of this greeting. The holy kiss is not a romantic or sensual gesture but a sign of genuine love, affection, and unity among believers.

Love and unity:The holy kiss symbolizes the unity and love shared among believers in the early Christian community. It serves as a reminder of the commandment given by Jesus to love one another (John 13:34-35). This expression of affection and unity was meant to transcend social, cultural, and ethnic barriers, demonstrating the transformative power of the Gospel.

Cultural adaptation:It is important to note that the holy kiss mentioned in this verse was a cultural practice specific to the early church. While the principle of expressing love and unity remains relevant, the specific method of greeting may vary across cultures and time periods. Today, believers may express this love and unity through appropriate cultural expressions, such as a warm handshake, a hug, or other gestures.

Application today:Although the holy kiss may not be a common practice in many contemporary Christian cultures, the underlying principle of expressing love, warmth, and unity remains significant. Believers are encouraged to greet one another with genuine affection and extend Christian love in their interactions. It serves as a reminder to prioritize love, humility, and unity within the body of Christ.
