1 Corinthians 3:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:34
Listen to this article

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it is essential to consider the broader context. In the preceding verses (1 Corinthians 3:18-23), Paul contrasts worldly wisdom with godly wisdom. He urges the Corinthians not to deceive themselves by relying solely on human wisdom, for it is futile and insufficient.

This verse is found within the larger context of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, where he addresses various issues and concerns within the church. In this particular section, Paul emphasizes the importance of spiritual wisdom and discernment over worldly wisdom.

Contrast between God’s Wisdom and the World’s Wisdom:Paul asserts that the wisdom of this world is considered foolishness in the sight of God. The world’s wisdom is based on human intellect, reasoning, and worldly standards. However, God’s wisdom surpasses human understanding and is founded on His divine knowledge and truth.

The Foolishness of Worldly Wisdom:Paul quotes from the Old Testament (Job 5:13) to support his point. The phrase “He taketh the wise in their own craftiness” highlights the irony of the situation. Even those who consider themselves wise in their worldly knowledge and schemes can be ensnared by their own cleverness. It emphasizes the limitations and inadequacy of human wisdom when compared to God’s wisdom.

Dependence on God’s Wisdom:The verse encourages believers to rely on God’s wisdom rather than solely trusting in human wisdom. True wisdom comes from God, and it is through His revelation, guidance, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that believers gain spiritual discernment and understanding.

  • Humility:This verse reminds us to approach worldly wisdom with humility, recognizing its limitations. We should acknowledge that true wisdom comes from God and seek His guidance in our lives.
  • Trust in God’s Wisdom:Rather than relying solely on human understanding, we should trust in God’s wisdom and seek His counsel through prayer and studying His Word.
  • Discernment:The verse encourages us to develop spiritual discernment, allowing us to differentiate between godly wisdom and the deceptive allure of worldly wisdom. This discernment helps us make wise decisions aligned with God’s will.

In summary, 1 Corinthians 3:19 teaches us to prioritise God’s wisdom over worldly wisdom. Human wisdom may seem impressive, but it falls short when compared to the wisdom of God. By depending on God’s wisdom and seeking His guidance, we can navigate through life with discernment and make choices that honour Him.
