1 Corinthians 3:6

Listen to this article

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”

This verse is taken from the First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians and is part of a larger passage where Paul addresses the issue of divisions among the Corinthian believers. He emphasises the importance of unity and cooperation within the body of Christ.

In this particular verse, Paul uses an agricultural analogy to illustrate the roles that he and Apollos played in the spiritual growth of the Corinthian church. He likens himself to a planter who initially sows the seed, and Apollos to a waterer who nurtures and tends to the growing plant. However, Paul acknowledges that it is God who ultimately brings about the increase or growth.

Here are a few key insights we can draw from this verse:

  • Divine Sovereignty:Paul highlights the sovereignty of God in the process of spiritual growth. While Paul and Apollos had specific roles in planting and watering, they recognise that it is God who brings about the growth. This reminds us that although we may play important roles in ministry, ultimately, it is God who works in people’s lives and brings about transformation.
  • Unity and Cooperation:Paul’s reference to himself and Apollos demonstrates the need for unity and cooperation within the body of Christ. Rather than promoting division and favouritism among believers, Paul emphasises the shared purpose and collaborative effort in advancing God’s kingdom. This verse encourages believers to work together, recognising and appreciating the unique contributions of each individual without diminishing the ultimate importance of God’s work.
  • Faithfulness in Roles:Paul and Apollos’ willingness to fulfil their respective roles as planters and waterers demonstrates the importance of faithfulness in fulfilling the tasks given to us by God. They understood that their roles were complementary and necessary for the growth of the church. Similarly, in our own lives, it is important to faithfully carry out the tasks and responsibilities God has entrusted to us, trusting that He will bring about the increase.

Overall, 1 Corinthians 3:6 reminds us of the essential role God plays in the growth and development of believers. It encourages unity, cooperation, and faithfulness in serving God’s purposes, recognising that the ultimate increase comes from Him.
