In the Name of our Lord Iesus Christ, when yee are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Iesus Christ, 1 Corinthians 5:4 (KJV)

Before we examine the specific wording of the verse, it is essential to understand the broader context in which the apostle Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians. Paul was addressing a number of serious problems within the church community, and in this section he confronts the issue of sexual immorality that had infiltrated the congregation.

The phrase “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together” signals that the believers are to meet as a unified body under the lordship of Christ. Gathering in Jesus’ name means that the assembly acknowledges Him as the central authority of their fellowship and that their decisions and conduct should be shaped by His teachings and principles.

Paul adds “and my spirit,” indicating his spiritual presence among the believers despite his physical absence. This expression underscores the close pastoral connection Paul maintains with the church, affirming that his concern, guidance, and authority continue to operate through the Spirit even when he cannot be present in person.

The concluding words “with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ” highlight the divine authority and supernatural resources that accompany such a gathering. When believers assemble in Christ’s name and recognize His power, they are empowered to confront serious issues, uphold moral standards, and act in accordance with the gospel.

Overall, 1 Corinthians 5:4 reminds the church that unity under Christ’s name, the apostle’s spiritual presence, and the power of the Lord are essential foundations for addressing sin and maintaining holiness. The passage calls believers to align their actions with Christ’s teachings, especially when confronting grave moral failures within the community. For a fuller understanding, it is advisable to study the entire chapter of 1 Corinthians 5 in its broader context to grasp the full scope of the issues Paul addresses and the corrective measures he proposes.
