1 Corinthians 6:16

Listen to this article

What, know ye not that he which is ioyned to an harlot, is one body? for two (saith he) shalbe one flesh. 1 Corinthians 6:16 (KJV)

In the verses that precede this statement, Paul urges the Corinthians to flee sexual immorality and to avoid immoral behaviours. Later in the chapter he reminds them that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and should be used to glorify God. Understanding this context helps to grasp the weight of the warning in 1 Corinthians 6:16.

The phrase “joined to a harlot” (or “prostitute”) underscores the gravity of sexual relations with a prostitute. Paul asserts that such a union makes one body with the harlot, a reality that carries serious spiritual and moral implications.

Paul further supports his statement by referencing the words of Jesus concerning marriage. Jesus taught in Matthew 19:5‑6 that when a man and a woman marry, they become one flesh. By alluding to this, Paul illustrates that sexual intimacy is intended for the covenant of a loving, committed marriage.

By saying that “two shall be one flesh,” Paul highlights the unity and bond that occur within marriage. He implies that sexual relations outside the boundaries of marriage disrupt God’s intended design for intimacy and create a connection contrary to His plan.

The broader passage underscores the sanctity of the body. Believers are encouraged to live in a way that reflects their identity as temples of the Holy Spirit, avoiding sexual immorality and pursuing holiness. Honouring God with our bodies acknowledges their sacredness.

Overall, 1 Corinthians 6:16 reminds believers of the significance of sexual intimacy and the sacredness of the body. It reinforces the importance of honouring God’s design for sexuality within marriage while warning against immoral behaviour that violates this divine plan.

A thorough study of any passage should consider its surrounding verses, the larger context of the book, and the teachings of Scripture as a whole. Seeking guidance from pastors, Bible scholars, or trusted resources can provide further insight and understanding.
