1 Corinthians 7:36

But if any man thinke that he behaueth himselfe vncomely toward his virgin, if she passe the floure of her age, and neede so require, let him doe what hee will, hee sinneth not: let them marry. 1 Corinthians 7:36 (KJV)

This verse is part of the larger context of Paul’s teaching on marriage and singleness in 1 Corinthians 7, where Paul addresses various issues and concerns raised by the Corinthian church regarding marriage and relationships. In verse 36 Paul addresses a specific situation where a man is considering the marriage of his virgin daughter. The phrase “behave uncomely” implies that the man feels he is not acting properly or honourably toward his daughter, and the phrase “pass the flower of her age” indicates that the daughter has exceeded the typical marriageable age. Paul acknowledges that if the father perceives this situation and recognises the need for his daughter to marry, he should go ahead and let them marry. It is important to note that in the cultural context of the time parents had significant influence over the marriages of their children, especially daughters. This verse affirms the father’s authority to make decisions concerning the marriage of his daughter and emphasises that the father is not sinning by allowing the marriage. By giving permission for the marriage to take place he is acting within his rights and fulfilling his responsibilities as a parent.

The New Testament teaches that marriage is honourable. Hebrews 13:4 states, “Let marriage be honorable among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled.” This affirms the value of marriage. The passage highlights the importance of considering the specific circumstances and needs of individuals in matters of marriage. It acknowledges the role of parental guidance and decision‑making while ensuring that the person involved is not burdened with unnecessary restrictions or sin. The underlying principle is to act in a way that is honourable and in the best interest of the individuals involved.

Overall, 1 Corinthians 7:36 teaches believers to consider the circumstances, seek wisdom, and act in ways that are honourable and in line with God’s principles when making decisions regarding marriage, allowing a marriage when a genuine need is recognised without incurring sin.
