1 John 2:20

Listen to this article

“But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.”

Context:The book of 1 John was written by the apostle John to address various issues within the early Christian community. The letter emphasises the importance of love, obedience to God’s commandments, and discerning false teachings.

The Anointing:The verse begins by stating, “But ye have an unction from the Holy One.” Here, the term “unction” refers to an anointing or an indwelling of the Holy Spirit upon believers. This anointing is a gift from God, given to all genuine followers of Christ. It signifies the presence and power of the Holy Spirit within them.

Knowledge:The verse continues, “and ye know all things.” This statement doesn’t imply that believers possess omniscience or have exhaustive knowledge of all things. Instead, it refers to the spiritual discernment and understanding that comes from the Holy Spirit’s presence. Through the Holy Spirit, believers gain insight into God’s truth, His will, and the ability to discern right from wrong.

The Holy Spirit’s Role:Throughout the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is described as the Helper, Comforter, and Guide sent by Jesus Christ after His ascension. The Holy Spirit empowers believers, leads them into truth, convicts them of sin, and helps them grow in their relationship with God.

Application:As believers, having the anointing of the Holy Spirit means we have a unique advantage. We can rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance, teaching, and revelation. This anointing enables us to understand and apply God’s Word, discern false teachings, and walk in righteousness. It is a reminder that we are not alone in our spiritual journey but have the Spirit of God dwelling within us, equipping us with knowledge and wisdom.

  • Continuing Study:To gain a deeper understanding of this passage, it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses (1 John 2:18-27) and explore the broader themes within the book of 1 John. This will provide a fuller context and a more comprehensive understanding of the message John conveys to the early Christian community.

Remember, while studying a specific verse is helpful, it is important to interpret it in the context of the entire Bible and consult other reliable resources to gain a well‑rounded understanding of God’s Word.
