1 John 2:4

Listen to this article

“He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

This verse is part of the first letter of John, which was written by the apostle John to a group of believers to encourage and instruct them in their faith. In this particular verse, John addresses the issue of claiming to know God while not obeying His commandments.

Here are a few key points to consider when studying 1 John 2:4:

  • The importance of knowing God:The verse begins with the phrase “He that saith, I know him.” This indicates that the person is making a claim of having a personal relationship with God. Knowing God involves more than mere intellectual knowledge; it implies having a deep, personal, and transformative relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.
  • The connection between knowing and keeping commandments:John emphasizes that genuine knowledge of God is closely linked to obeying His commandments. Merely claiming to know God without demonstrating obedience to His commandments is considered hypocritical and dishonest.
  • The consequence of not keeping God’s commandments:John asserts that if someone claims to know God but does not keep His commandments, that person is a liar. This strong statement reflects the importance of living out one’s faith in action. John suggests that a disconnect between profession and practice reveals the absence of the truth in that person’s life.
  • The role of truth:John concludes the verse by stating, the truth is not in him. This suggests that if someone does not keep God’s commandments, the truth of God’s Word and the transforming power of the Gospel have not taken root in their heart. The truth referred to here is the truth of the Gospel, which encompasses not only intellectual understanding but also a changed life and a heart aligned with God’s will.

In summary, 1 John 2:4 emphasizes the inseparable connection between knowing God and obeying His commandments. John warns against making empty claims of knowing God while failing to live in accordance with His Word. Authentic faith in God is evidenced by a life transformed by the truth of the Gospel and a genuine desire to follow His commandments.
